Global mantle convection models produce transform offsets along divergent plate boundaries

چکیده
Abstract The presence of offsets, appearing at intervals ranging from 10s to 100s kilometres, is a distinct characteristic constructive tectonic plate margins. By comparison, boundaries associated with subduction exhibit uninterrupted continuity. Here, we present global mantle convection calculations that result in mobile lithosphere featuring dynamically derived exhibiting contrasting superficial structure which distinguishes convergence and divergence. Implementing yield-stress governs the viscosity lithosphere, spreading top vigorously convecting form as divergent linear segments regularly offset by similar length zones correlate large degree shear but comparatively minimal Analogous do not emerge surface convergence. Comparing similarity morphologies model margins Earth’s demonstrates transform-like offsets are stress induced weakness owing passive rupturing.

متن کاملMIXING IN NUMERICAL MODElS OF MANTLE CONVECTION INCORPORATING PLATE KINEMATICS
The process by which subducted lithosphere is mixed by mantle convection is investigated in numerical calculations. The results show that the observed isotopic heterogeneity of mantle sources and their ancient (1-2 b.y.) apparent ages are consistent with convective mixing. Passive tracers, which are introduced below "trenches," are efficiently dispersed, but nonetheless, heterogeneities in trac...
متن کاملStress Diffusion Along Rupturing Plate Boundaries
An analysis is made of viscoelastic lithosphere/asthenosphere coupling in the time-dependent redistribution of stress along plate boundaries or other seismic lineaments following great earthquakes. The study is based on a generalization by Rice of Elsasser's model of stress-diffusion, i which general elastic plane stress deformations are allowed in lithospheric plates which are coupled in an el...
متن کاملThe generation of plate tectonics from mantle convection
In the last decade, significant progress has been made toward understanding how plate tectonics is generated from mantle dynamics. A primary goal of plate-generation studies has been the development of models that allow the top cold thermal boundary layer of mantle convection, i.e. the lithosphere, to develop broad and strong plate-like segments separated by narrow, weak and rapidly deforming b...
متن کاملTowards a realistic simulation of plate margins in mantle convection
We have incorporated faults as plate margins into time-dependent mantle convection models by using a mixed Eulerian and Lagrangian finite element formulation. Plate margins in our models can migrate dynamically in response to variations in mantle buoyancy, and this enables us to study the dynamics of mantle and plates including changes in plate size. Convection models in a cylindrical geometry ...
